Based on my analysis of 264 electric car charge times, this article reveals how long it takes to charge an electric car.

The charge times for each electric car are also listed.

Spoilers:

  • It takes 7 hrs 54 mins to charge an electric car at home, on average, at 240V;
  • It takes between 3 hrs and 15 hrs 18 mins to charge an electric car using standard 240V charging;
  • Dual / high power charging at home can save you between 1 hr 18 mins and 8 hrs 15 mins (5 hrs 25 mins is average) of charge time; and
  • On average, it takes 1 hr 17 mins at a public charging station to fully charge an electric car.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

It takes 7 hrs 54 mins to charge an electric car, on average, based on the charge time of 264 electric cars.

This is the combined average for standard, dual and high power charging at 240V.

It takes between 3 hrs and 15 hrs 18 mins to charge an electric car using a standard 240V charger, with 8 hrs 43 mins being the average and 12 hrs being the most common.

Dual / high power charging at 240V reduces electric car charging times by between 1 hr 18 mins and 8 hrs 15 mins, with 7 hrs 15 mins being the most common and 5 hrs 25 mins being the average amount of time saved.

But that’s just the time saved, here’s how long high power charging takes…

It takes between 2 hrs 30 mins and 9 hrs 36 mins to charge an electric car using dual / high power charging at 240V, with 5 hrs 56 mins being the average and 4 hrs 45 mins being the most common charge times.

240V chargers are commonly referred to as Level 2 chargers, while 110V chargers are referred to as Level 1 chargers. Level 1 chargers are not as powerful and therefore offer slower charging times compared to Level 2 chargers.

On the other hand, Level 3 chargers, commonly available at public charging stations, typically deliver 440V charging. These chargers deliver the fastest charging times.

It takes 11 mins 36 s to 2 hrs 42 mins to charge an electric car at a public charging station, with 27 mins 12 s being the most common and 1 hour 17 minutes being the average charging times.

A simple calculation was done to estimate, due to all the variables, how long it takes to charge an electric car at a public charging station. Let’s get into this in more detail, before listing the charge time of over 264 electric cars.

But first, a quick summary.

The table below shows how long it takes to charge an electric car using various charging options.

Standard chargingDual / high power chargingPublic charging station
Average charge time8 hrs 43 mins5 hrs 56 mins1 hr 17 mins
Most common charge time12 hrs4 hrs 45 mins27 mins 12 s
Fastest charge time3 hrs2 hrs 30 mins11 mins 36 s
Longest charge time15 hrs 18 mins9 hrs 36 mins2 hrs 42 mins

Again, the combined average charging times for standard and dual / high power charging (offered by some manufacturers) works out to 7 hrs 54 mins.

The standard and dual / high power charging times are more definitive – sourced from fueleconomy.gov (the official U.S. government source for fuel economy information). The complete list is below.

However, the charging times using a public charging station are not as definitive due to the many variables. So let’s get into this in more detail now.

How long does it take to charge an electric car at a station?

It takes 11 mins 36 s to 2 hrs 42 mins to charge an electric car at a public charging station. The most common charge time is an estimated 27 mins 12 s while the average charge time is 1 hour 17 mins.

So how were these figures calculated?

According to the official U.S. government source for fuel economy information, fueleconomy.gov, it takes 20 minutes to charge an electric car to the point where it can travel 50 miles or more.

Using the conservative range of 50 miles per 20 minutes of charging (which is 0.4 minutes per mile) along with the shortest, longest, average and most common ranges identified from 277 electric car ranges (i.e. 29, 405, 192.93 and 68 miles respectively), it’s a simple calculation.

It takes 0.4 minutes at a public charging station to charge an electric car enough to go 1 mile. With this, the electric car range can be used to estimate the total time it’ll take to get to full charge from empty.

Simply multiply the total range by 0.4 to get the estimated charge time.

But electric cars won’t pull into a charging station with a completely empty battery.

In this case subtract the estimated range still available to the car (this should be noted on the console) from the car’s total range (listed online or in the manual), and then multiply that by 0.4.

However, not all electric cars and charging stations are the same. Some electric cars don’t accept fast charging and some fast charging stations deliver quicker charging than others. For example, Tesla Superchargers typically offer 480V fast-charging, while other charging stations report offering up to 900V DC fast-charging.

Also, electric car battery capacities and charging performances differ, and they deteriorate with age.

Ultimately, how long it takes to charge an electric car at a public charging station will depend on many factors including the EV model, the performance and charge state of the battery, along with the charging station’s facilities.

OK, now that the fastest, longest, average and most common electric car charging times are covered, let’s take a look at how long it takes to charge over 264 specific electric cars.

Electric car charge times – over 264 listed

The table below lists how long it takes over 264 electric cars to charge. The table is arranged from fastest charging time to longest.

The motor / battery details are also listed. This is because battery capacity has a significant impact on charge times – smaller capacity batteries will generally reach full charge quicker than larger capacity batteries.

Tip: if you’re looking for the charge time of a specific electric car, simply hit Ctrl + F (on Windows/Linux) or Cmd + F (on macOS OSX) on your keyboard and search for the model. If you’re on your cell phone, check your browser for a “Find in page” feature.

These times are for 240V charging, which requires a Level 2 charger. 110V, Level 1, charging times will be longer.

Unsure about what a good Level 2 charger looks like, and what performance benefits they offer?

Here’s a great, efficient and versatile example of a Level 2 charger: ChargePoint Home Flex Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger. This smart device is ENERGY STAR certified and enables you to schedule charging when electricity is cheapest, helping you to keep your costs low.

Speaking of costs, let’s take a brief look at charging costs next.

How much does it cost to recharge an electric car?

It costs $5.59 to charge an electric car at home.

This assumes a kWh rate of 13 cents (the US average in 2019) and a battery capacity of 43 kWh (the average worldwide).

It costs $50.51 per month, $606.15 per year, to recharge electric cars enough to travel 13,476 miles annually (the average for US drivers).

Now that we know how long it takes to charge an electric car and how much it costs, let’s take a look at how far they go when they’re fully charged and how much electricity they use per mile.

How far do electric cars go when charged?

Electric cars can travel 193 miles, on average, when charged.

However, 68 miles is the most common range worldwide for electric cars.

Overall, electric cars can travel 29 miles to 405 miles when fully charged.

Electric cars use 0.346kWh of electricity per mile, on average. Get more details in this related post: Average Electric Car kWh Per Mile [Results From 231 EVs].

Overall, electric cars have a kWh per mile consumption that ranges from 0.24 kWh to 0.87 kWh.

Don’t miss…

Electric car charging technology is enhancing rapidly.

Charging times are dropping, while travel distance is increasing.

Electric cars are becoming increasingly environmentally friendly. However, the power they need tends to come from the burning of fossil fuels. 63% of US electricity comes from the burning of fossil fuels according to the Energy Information Administration (providers of “official energy statistics from the U.S. Government”).

If you’re interested in reducing your carbon footprint even more, consider getting in touch with your energy provider and asking about their green energy options.
